What Is BMR? How Many Calories Does Your Body Really Burn at Rest?

You burn calories 24 hours a day, even while sleeping. Your heart beats, your lungs expand and contract, your cells divide, and your brain processes information constantly. The total energy your body needs to perform these basic life-sustaining functions is called your Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR.

Why BMR Matters for Weight Management

Your BMR typically accounts for 60-75% of your total daily calorie expenditure. This means even before you walk, exercise, or lift a finger, your body has already burned the majority of your daily calories just keeping you alive. Understanding your BMR gives you a scientifically accurate baseline: if you eat fewer calories than your BMR plus daily activity, you will lose weight. If you eat more, you will gain weight. It really is that simple.

The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

The most widely accepted formula for calculating BMR is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which was validated in a 2005 study by the American Dietetic Association. For men, the formula is: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) + 5. For women, the formula subtracts 161 instead of adding 5. This equation accounts for the metabolic differences between biological sexes and is considered more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict equation.

Factors That Affect Your BMR

Several factors influence your BMR beyond height, weight, and age. Muscle mass is the biggest variable—muscle tissue burns significantly more calories at rest than fat tissue, which is why strength training is so effective for long-term weight management. Genetics, hormonal balance (especially thyroid hormones), and even ambient temperature also play roles. People living in colder climates tend to have slightly higher BMRs as their bodies work harder to maintain core temperature.

Calculate Your Personal BMR

Our free BMR Calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to instantly compute your resting metabolic rate. Simply enter your age, gender, height, and weight, and get an accurate calorie baseline in seconds. Use this number as the foundation of your meal planning, whether your goal is weight loss, muscle gain, or maintenance. As always, your personal data never leaves your browser.
